GOTO Night: Riemann – Monitoring Framework

Mature distributed systems require monitoring a plethora of different systems from OS to application layer, written in different languages, with varying semantics. Massaging and integrating these events to obtain clear and useful information requires nontrivial parsing and processing scripts. Finally, these events must be distributed to heterogenous storage, visualization, processing, and alerting systems. Riemann aims to address these needs with a common language for metrics and logs, a compact, expressive language for stream processing, arbitrary computation in a full-fledged language, and comprehensive integration with a broad array of commercial and open-source monitoring systems.

Kyle Kingsbury, a.k.a “Aphyr”, is a computer safety researcher working as an independent consultant. He’s the author of the Riemann monitoring system, the Clojure from the Ground Up introduction to programming, and the Jepsen series on distributed systems correctness. He grills databases in the American Midwest.
